ARA NI ARA @ MIT HACKING ARTS, 2018

No Hacking Arts no MIT Media Lab.

ALAAGBA @ CCBB SP | 2018

It also engages the people with intent of drawing them into action and constructing perhaps multiple simultaneous discourses on the issues of post‐colonial African experiences and realities. Borrowing its title from the religion ethics, values and practice of Egungun, the theme of the performance is to re‐open discusses on the issue of decolonization of Africa. As a brazilian artist, I intend my collaboration to illuminate our own issues related to the theme, specially in this moment of atrocities and violence generated by our white, rich and male process of colonization.

The mediums of expression in the project were restricted mainly to performance and installation, which include text, drawing and video.

Ariasè is going to be
a collective contemplative and participatory experience, where together, we
will realize a ritualistic program for cleaning ourselves –minds, fields, looks-, as well as the new FLAGCX space, the Castle.

It is an itinerant movement in which in each space we will be immersed in a performance piece, a
video, or an action to be made by the present people.

Lets create a mechanism for generating open spaces and opening new neural paths, giving us more possibilities of answers for old or new stimuli.

At the end we will cheer to the new, telling our goals and desires to seeds that will be planted afterwards. We will engrave our
wishes in the earth and we will give it time to blossom.

Ariasè means initiatory baths in an old ancestral language. My intent is this experiment to
be a crack in reality where the time will be slower, we will do extra ordinary things not virtually together and we will hopefully built a new state of presence and share it with each other, cleaning, feeding and preparing ourselves to just observe the change that is always takes us to the new.

June 1st, 2017 - 8pm - @ Flagcx

real.

eu obtivesse a força criativa renovada.

In 2015, I set out to accomplish a performance where I used my last seven periods
to print, in an arena of cotton paper, the memory of the action resulting from
the movement of the drops of blood on the surface of the skin. The act was
conducted in an art gallery, within the schedule of the first edition of its
performance festival.

So far, I have understood performance as a language that carries the
“unrehearsed” as a structuring element that foresees the creation of
a score/program of actions to be carried out in a given space and time, which
are studied and memorized, yet not rehearsed. Repetition as refinement of the
action, as used in the a theatrical scene, is not used in this case. Here,
there is (or was) no prior refinement, but a joint construction (artist +
public) in real time. However, the action made me think about the importance of
control, at least in part, with regard to the images projected at the time of
creating the score, so that there is no dissociation of the thought and the
action, or a minor artistic schizophrenia.

If creating a performance piece that contains precises images that have not yet
been tested or that merely inhabit the field of ideas, it is very likely that
at the end that we will be faced with a result that we hadn’t imagined. But
this is also an excellent opportunity to rethink our standardized mechanisms of
creation. Is this minor yet healthy “schizophrenia” that transports
us from comfort to confrontation. It is the driver for change.

In my case, the intention of the action was closely linked to the symbolism of
menstrual blood as nourishment of a possible life and the creative potential
carried by these cycles. Just as in some cultures fruits are offered to the
earth in order to be returned in double in a bountiful harvest, I wanted to
deliver my creative power represented by blood into the ground, so that I could
obtained renewed creative force. However, I didn’t consider hat the blood was
made to flow inside the body, and that when it flows out it creates a sense of
strangeness and an association with images of pain, injury, accident as well as
other readings from the collective unconscious, such as violence, filth, death,
decay, etc. I merely paid attention to the smooth movement that the drops would
make on the surface of the skin and in the act of surrender.

I’m aware that performance art has experience itself as presupposition and I
consider openness to reassess poetic choices as essential to the growth of the
artist. I also understand the great predisposition we have of running into
“mistakes” when working with a type of art that depends so much on
casting oneself into the moment, is laden by that day, time, people and place,
in this case, an art gallery.

After the time necessary to settle on the action, I wondered how far an artist who
works with this medium would benefit by placing experience as an artwork. And
to what extent experience placed as artwork loses its power as an open,
pulsating and living experimentation by gaining the status quo of a completed
project. I believe this position is achieved only through the understanding
that comes from the work itself, the maturation of the idea and the time needed
to traverse the path that leads to the feeling of completeness of the work,
making this lapse between concept and realization increasingly smaller and the
only anxiety taken on by the artist could be a productive anxiety that shows
the way, and not one that makes us skip steps in the creation process.

However, if on the one hand my experience has become “artwork” by the place in
which it was included, on the other, this same place was what enabled the
presence of the public and the discovery of the ambiguity of the gallery space,
which allows the group experience, takes the artist out of the isolated process
of creation, and uses exposure to bring about a positive vulnerability for
sustaining presence.

Human presence itself, that which serves as a bridge between action and spectator, is
the very core of performance art. An expanded presence full of intent,
concentration and self-awareness of every part, every empty space, so rare that
it draws attention. And I suspect that’s what the public is seeking: rare
states of presence that deconstruct the everyday nature of reality, states that
bring more brightness, or color, or even incoherence. Incoherences can be
fascinating. I also suspect that work with oppositions is an effective expander
of presence. Heaven and earth, front and back, woman and man, hot and cold,
pulsated and fluid, all in the same body. But this is primary speculation still
being researched in the field.

Regardless of what is done, how it is done is of fundamental importance for
fascination.  The state of absolute
concentration in the gesture, self-awareness, the act of making choices from
second to second, having a body that is not labeled blotting out the boundaries
between opposites are essential components for creating a strong presence able
to create the most powerful intersection that art can create: the intersection
between artist and audience, the place where ideas, values and philosophies are
shared, and where there is the possibility of change/mutual growth through
experience.
