The performance took place in May 2015 at the exhibition 'Communal Land' | Marina Abramovic + MAI and consists in the representation of a shared rite of passage, in which over a four-hour period the artist performs a sequence of actions aimed at making the cutting of her own hair into a ceremony, cadenced by sound improvisation of percussionist Mawusi Tulani.

Scientifically considered as holding vital force for being able to keep genetic information alive even after being removed from the head, the act of cutting became a symbol of transformation in antiquity, in which this type of cleansing was linked to initiation rites where women gave their womanhood to the goddesses of the moon by sacrificing their hair. Cutting, also taken by ancient cultures as human scalping, the equivalent to a serpent shedding its skin, signify renouncing identity and physicality and being reborn.

In addition, in a contemporary reading, the hair is a producer of language and, through it, the individual expresses their identity, set of beliefs and positions themselves socially based on the cognitive policies of their environment.

The title Egí<>Biy, of African origin, means to clean and to be born, and these two movements govern the path of the artist. At first, Tathy physically interacts with the space and the audience using the hair, making sweeping gestures and "cleaning up" the arena, the doors and people, one by one, inviting them to become part of the act by donating part of their hair and providing continuity to her own "scalping".

The cutting, which may last minutes, when extended, provides a tension and expectation in relation to the narrative of the gesture, as well as the water element in the work, which incites a uterine atmosphere of deceleration. The prolongation of the time through meticulous interaction between the artist and the material, space and sound is essential for the production of the extra-ordinary environment. Each lock of hair turns into a poetic element added to other objects incorporated into the action, forming an installation that gradually fills the space and creates a memory of the performance.

At the end, all of the locks of hair from the audience are mixed with those of the artist and deposited in a glass aquarium containing seawater, forming a network from the intersection of the personal information contained in the hair.

Part of Tathy's research also deals with the discoveries of neuroscience on the interception of sensory patterns. With the help of mirror neurons, which have the function of literally mirroring sensations, Yazigi intends to enable people to feel what she is experiencing through proprioception and the artistic experience.
